Why You Should Wear Sunscreen Indoors Every Day

Why Wear Sunscreen Indoors? (Yes, Even When You’re Just at Home!)

If you're anything like me, you probably thought sunscreen was only really necessary for the pool or beach, a summer barbecue, or watching sporting events from the hot, sunny bleachers. Honestly, I didn’t know it was recommended indoors, until I started reading up on it. And I suspect a lot of other people don’t know this either.

Here’s the deal: even when you’re relaxing at home, your skin might still be getting a surprising dose of damaging light.

Those Sneaky UVA Rays Slip Through Windows

UVA rays are the long-wave type of ultraviolet light, and they can pass through glass. That means if you sit by a sunny window while reading, working, or driving, you’re still getting skin exposure. (Ever notice how your driver-side arm is always more tanned than the other, especially after you've taken a long drive on a sunny day? Over time, this can cause premature aging, wrinkles, and even increase skin cancer risk.

Blue Light from Screens Can Cause Skin Stress

Our computers, phones, and TVs emit high-energy visible (HEV) blue light. Research suggests it can contribute to hyperpigmentation and break down collagen, especially for those of us who spend hours in front of screens. Mineral sunscreens (those with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) offer some protection against blue light too.

Dermatologists Say SPF Is for Indoors Too

Many skin experts recommend using broad-spectrum SPF daily, even when you're inside. This is especially important if you spend a lot of time near windows or in front of electronics. SPF 30 is the baseline, but higher protection (like SPF 50) is ideal if you’re getting a lot of incidental light while indoors.

Makeup Can Double as Protection

If you wear makeup, you may already be getting a little SPF without realizing it. Some primers and CC creams include sun protection. Mary Kay’s Primer and CC Cream both have SPF, which makes it super easy to add another layer of defense.

My Current SPF Routine:

It’s quick, it’s easy, and it makes me feel confident I’m protecting my skin -- whether I'm outside or indoors.

For my arms and other body parts, I use Mary Kay® Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50.

The Bottom Line

Sunscreen indoors isn’t just for skincare obsessives. It’s for anyone who wants to protect their skin long-term. Those UVA rays and blue light exposures may be invisible, but their effects are real.

By making SPF part of your morning routine (just like brushing your teeth), you’re giving your skin the best shot at staying healthy, youthful, and glowing.
